Your Kia’s alternator produces all your car’s electricity. It labors away in the heart of your car turning mechanical energy into electricity. Eventually, like all components, the alternator will show signs of failure. As your Kia dealer, we can help you when you need an alternator repair. These are a few signs you may need a new alternator very soon.

Starting Problems

If you’re experiencing starting issues, the problem could be a worn battery or a damaged starter. It could also be a sign that your alternator is failing. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and supplying electricity for your car’s other systems. As your alternator gets older and weaker, it will struggle to fully recharge your battery.

The battery provides a powerful electrical charge that starts your engine. This charge uses up a large part of your battery’s reserves. Normally, this isn’t a problem, as your alternator will recharge your battery as soon as your engine starts. If this power isn’t replaced, your battery will slowly become weaker. We can test your battery and the alternator to find the cause of the problem.

Dim Lights

Dim headlights could be a sign that the bulbs are going to blow. If you notice that your cabin lights are also dim, the most likely cause is a failing alternator. An alternator gets weaker as it ages, and this reduces its power production. When your alternator has reached the point that it can’t supply all of your car’s electrical demands, your computer has to allocate the available power.

The available power is allocated on a priority system, so spark plugs and other crucial systems receive power first. The remaining power is shifted from component to component depending on need. Dim lights are a sign that they’re receiving just enough power to light up but not enough to function correctly. Our technicians will test your alternator and replace it if it’s failing.

Your Alternator Is Old

Alternators have a relatively long lifespan of approximately eight years. Like all other components, they will eventually wear and need replacement. An alternator that fails always shows and gives advanced notice that something is wrong. You may see that the lights are slightly dimmer than they should be or that you experience random electrical problems.

A worn alternator will drain your battery and can cause your car to stall. For safety, it’s important to replace a worn alternator ASAP. Our technicians can quickly and easily fit the replacement for you.
