What makes Kia crossovers and compacts so popular with Marion drivers? Proven reliability, quality construction, and a class-leading warranty are just the start. But some also feel like there’s something missing from the lineup, so we can’t say we’re surprised when we hear this question from Kia enthusiasts across Anderson: “Does Kia make a pickup truck?”
As Kia hasn’t gone public with all of its pickup plans for the future, the jury is still out on that question. Still, recent news suggests that a Kia pickup may not be too far off for US buyers. Join the Kia of Muncie team for a look at the Kia truck developments (and rumors) that give us hope!
Will There Be a Kia Pickup Truck for US Buyers?
It’s not that a Kia pickup doesn’t exist but rather that one hasn’t yet been developed for sale stateside. So, does Kia make a pickup truck for markets outside the US? The answer to this question is “yes”: the Kia Bongo cabover truck has been sold in South Korea for decades! The development of multiple Kia concept trucks has also fanned the flames of Kia truck rumors in the US and those surrounding the Kia Mojave Truck and the Kia Soul’Ster, built on the popular Kia Soul subcompact SUV.
None of these Kia trucks have made their way to Fishers Kia dealerships, but that hasn’t stopped the buzz from building. So, is a Kia truck on the way? Here’s what the rumor mill has to say on the matter:
Hyundai released their Santa Cruz pickup concept in 2015. That sparked public interest in a possible unibody Kia pickup truck since Kia and Hyundai are sister companies.
In early 2019, the redesigned Kia Mohave SUV was previewed in Seoul. Many surmised that the Mohave SUV would make a great platform for a Kia pickup.
The powerful and pickup-esque Kia Telluride SUV set off even more pickup talk with its release in 2019.
The “Truck-y” Telluride, Transformed
It’s time to brush the rumors aside: Kia has confirmed that a real Kia pickup truck is in development, slated for a 2022 or 2023 release. As it turns out, Kia decided that the Telluride’s blocky form, hard edges, and off-road capability make it the perfect platform for a Kia pickup truck. The new truck will share many of the technology and features that made the Telluride such a popular choice among midsize SUV buyers. Options will include gasoline and diesel engines and a single or double cab to transform some of the Telluride’s 87 cubic feet of cargo space into a pickup bed.
But now for the bad news: according to the Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors in Australia, the new Telluride-based Kia truck is being released in Australia. So, does Kia make a pickup truck that will one day reach dealerships in Anderson and Fishers? While Kia Motors America has been hesitant to comment about the possibility of a Kia pickup for the US market, it didn’t entirely rule out the possibility.
