There’s a lot to keep up with if you want to make your vehicle last a long time, and ball joints are one of those components that may need to be replaced at some point. Ball joints are what allow your wheels to have more flexibility, much like a ball joint in a socket. Unlike some other parts of your vehicle, you may not notice ball joints going bad right away. How do I know if my car’s ball joints are going bad?
Ball joints are essential for the suspension to work fully, so you’ll notice problems occurring toward the front suspension if they start loosening up. The first sign is a clunky noise, which is caused by the ball joint rattling around in the socket. This is what happens when it gets too loose, and is usually the most noticeable. Another sign is a strong vibration coming through the steering wheel. Hard vibrations shouldn’t be happening in your vehicle, so this is one likely culprit. The last way to tell if the ball joints are going bad is to let go of the steering wheel out on the road for a couple seconds. If the steering wheel starts veering left or right, that’s a pretty clear sign that the ball joint on that side is in need of being replaced.
